Turning Dubai INSIDEOUT

We are turning Dubai INSIDEOUT!

Saturday 4th February we are turning Dubai InsideOut with your help and participation. We finally got permission to use a public space, although for one day only, and post the 55 posters selected during the TEDxDubai 2011.

We felt it was important to join the INSIDEOUT movement and wanted to get public attention to celebrate an important and often overlooked fact: “Many nationalities are peacefully living together here in Dubai”.

At TEDxDubai we support and celebrate diversity and are very proud to be showcasing the many cultures intersecting, learning from each other and ultimately living peacefully in an environment that for many has become “home”.

So if you support this statement, if you want to help us take over the Emaar boulevard, hang the posters, meet the photographer Sueraya Shaheen who kindly took the portraits for this project and be part of our action documentary meet us at 09.30 am on Saturday 4th February outside the Pavilion.

We will be filming the action and interviewing all participant and the footage might be included in the InsideOut Documentary that JR will release at the end of the year.

Please see attached the thumbnails of the selected pictures. We have already sent emails to the selected individuals and, If you recognize yourself but did not receive the email, please contact us.

Those marked in red color have not been identified yet, and if you spot anyone you know please get in touch at natascia@tedxdubai.com or help us tag them on the TEDxDubai Facebook Page

Looking forward to the action, and let’s turn Dubai INSIDEOUT

Message from TEDxDubai Curators

Dear TEDxsters

Registrations to attend the event on October 22nd are now closed and with less than one week to go to the event we feel it is necessary to share some insights.
We have been overwhelmed with applications, both for attending and volunteering, but as you know there are only 1000 seats available (actually a lot less considered the sponsors entitlement to tickets).

Selecting the candidates to attend has been a difficult task for the selecting team, that this year was allocated outside from the UAE.

Many raised concerns about the selecting process and the rationale behind selecting delegates, and we feel that now is the right time to explain what seemed to have been lost in translation.

TEDxDubai is a FREE to attend event (no fees charged at the door) but it’s by invitation only. TED allows organizers to charge up to 100 U$ for the tickets but since 2009 we decided not to go that way although it would have been immensely easier both in terms of fund raising and production.

TEDxDubai has always been produced with the kind support of partners and sponsors that provided the funds to cover production costs.

At TEDxDubai we value the attendees as much as we value the speakers, and if we decided to charge for admittance we might have lost some who, still true TEDsters but maybe without the financial reach to attend the conference.

The currency used to get in is not money but “engagement”. In order to get invited we ask prospective delegates to fill a form. The “lost in translation” starts here. Some felt that sending an empty form was enough, some used it for sarcasm and others replied with on liners because, having attended previous editions felt that they “ had “ to be selected by default.

Others instead went to great lengths to help us understand who they are (and we don’t mean what position they occupy in their job) but who they really are as individuals part of a community, and what kind of dreams they have for that community. These were the applications we were really after.

We also had a plan: we wanted to represent as many nationalities, age groups etc as possible to reflect the cultural diversity that makes Dubai such a special place, and then we also had to ensure that candidates who never attended TEDxDubai before had a slight chance above others who have been at every TEDx event in the region.

We know that some felt that this was an elitist contest and others felt it was not fair because they are the biggest fans TED ever had and then others rightly felt that they did provide the best possible answers.

To everyone who feels that way we can just say that, if you are a true supporter of “ideas worth spreading” , don’t’ become a hater just because you didn’t get an invite.

Keep supporting, watch the talks online as soon as they are available, keep contributing to the community; we received more than 4000 applications and many will have to watch the talks online.

We thank everyone for applying, for taking the time, for supporting and believing in the TEDxDubai mission of “ideas worth spreading from Dubai to the World” and rest assured that we are doing our best to keep this event an equal opportunity space for everyone involved.

We also want to take this opportunity to remind everyone that we work for an entire year to bring the conference together and we are open to suggestions on how to improve the communication, the organization and everything else. TEDxDubai is managed entirely by few people, in their spare time and we just ask you to kindly engage with us also in the 11 months prior to the event.

KEEP SPREADING LOCAL IDEAS, Watch TED and TEDxDubai talks, and value the Beauty of Small Things.

Admission Xplained

Dear TEDxsters

As many of you already know attending TEDxDubai is by invitation only and filling the Registration form on our website does not guarantee a ticket to the event.

Please be aware that only 1000 seats are available and that the number of applications is so overwhelming that we can only contact the selected delegates.

Please do your best to fill all the fields in the Registration form as incomplete applications are not considered. If you have been selected you will receive an email to the address specified on your application which will contain a QCR code.

The code itself represent your digital entry ticket to the event. It is unique, non transferrable and can only be validated when presented at the Registration desk on the 22nd of October together with a valid ID.

If you have received admittance but you are unable to attend please let us know by emailing us at decline@tedxdubai.com to allow us to allocate your seat to someone else.

Help us keep this event a paperless event and print your code only if your phone does not have any image display capabilities, otherwise the preferred option would be for you to save the QCR code as an image or to save the email confirmation containing the code.

If you want to know more about QCR codes please read here and below you can find links of free applications that enable your phone camera to scan QCR codes.

iOS Blackberry Nokia Android

Please check your spam folder and adjust your security levels to make sure your admission is not lost in there.

TEDxDubai Team

Do you dream to speak at TEDxDubai?

SELECTIONS ARE NOW CLOSED!

Here is an idea we want to share to enable everyone to embrace the spirit of Ideas worth spreading.

This year we will allow a couple of people the chance of becoming TEDxDubai speakers through an audience based selection process.

If you think you have what it takes to be a TEDxDubai speaker, then this might be your opportunity.

We invite you to come along and pitch your talk proposal/idea in TED style to our cameras; we will then upload your video on our Facebook Page and open votes for a few days.

The ideas that will get the highest likes will have the chance of appearing on stage on the 22nd of October together with the other TEDxDubai 2011 Speakers.

____________________________________________________________________________________________________

HERE IS OUT IT WORKS

In order to self evaluate the appeal of your idea please review the following TED commandments

Dream big. Strive to create the best talk you have ever given. Reveal something never seen before. Do something the audience will remember forever. Share an idea that could change the world.

Show us the real you. Share your passions, your dreams … and also your fears. Be vulnerable. Speak of failure as well as success.

Make the complex plain. Don’t try to dazzle intellectually. Don’t speak in abstractions. Explain! Give examples. Tell stories. Be specific.

Connect with people’s emotions. Make us laugh! Make us cry!

Don’t flaunt your ego. Don’t boast. It’s the surest way to switch everyone off.

No selling from the stage! Unless we have specifically asked you to, do not talk about your company or organization. And don’t even think about pitching your products or services or asking for funding from stage.

Feel free to comment on other speakers, to praise or to criticize. Controversy energizes! Enthusiastic endorsement is powerful!

Don’t read your talk. Notes are not allowed.

You must end your talk on time. Doing otherwise is to steal time from the people that follow you. We won’t allow it.

Rehearse your talk in front of a trusted friend … for timing, for clarity, for impact.

Here are a couple of videos that can help you defining the scope and delivery of your TEDxDubai speaking proposals.

____________________________________________________________________________________________________

SO, WHAT’S NEXT?

If you still think you have all the numbers to give it a go then you will need to organize your proposal keeping in mind the following:

- The proposal ( or pitch ) can’t be a short version of the talk but more an explanation of the content that you will like to share from the stage.

- You will not be able to use audiovisuals ( slides or videos ) so you will need to explain verbally how your Talk will look like both in terms of contents and collaterals.

- The pitch will need to be of maximum 60 seconds in duration. It can be less than 60 seconds but not more.

- Candidates will be sitting in front of our camera and will be given the opportunity of delivering their pitch for two times only.

- Candidates cannot read from notes but will have to look directly into the camera.

- The best of the two takes will be uploaded ( no editing of any sort )

- Candidates will need to sign a release form entitling TEDxDubai organizers to utilize the clip on the Facebook Page.

- Under age candidates will need to come accompanied by a family member.

Dear TEDxsters it has been a while since we blogged, mainly because we have been busy creating the conditions necessary for our next TEDxDubai event, and also because our website has been hacked ( we are flattered by the continuous attention, a little less about the amount of data we lost) and we have been working hard to create this new online space for the next event.

The Beauty Of Small Things is a natural follow up to our previous events. It’s a moment of reflection towards the small little things that in life we either take for granted or overlook in favor of greater distractions often not as important. It is also a time to celebrate the small ingredients into the Big Ideas that have contributed to turn a simple concept, a tiny aspiration, a secret little dream into a life changing opportunity that has impacted the world or a community.

We also felt the importance of celebrating the “small” in a location like Dubai, mostly known for the excess and extravagances and remind ourselves and everyone that “less is more” and that the present grandeur sits on a multitude of tiny grains of sand.

We cannot wait to start introducing you soon to the line up of our speakers and inspire you to register to attend, volunteer with us or take part in one of the up and coming initiatives that will pave the way while we patiently wait for 22.10.11.

Thank you for your continuous support and we hope this edition will once again inspire and produce positive effects.
